Advanced Learner loan (England only)

If you are aged 19 years or over and thinking of starting a course at level 3 or above, you may qualify for one of the government’s Advanced Learner Loan to help fund your studies.

It is easy to apply for a loan, there is no credit check and your household income isn’t taken into account; and what’s more, you won’t have to pay anything back until you earn over £25,700 a year. Through our referral provision, you can get registered on a number of courses at Level 3 and above.

Who can apply for the Advance learner loan?

To be referred to apply for a loan you must be:

  • 19 years of age or over at the start of your course (there’s no upper age limit)
  • enrolling onto a level 3, 4, 5 or 6 course (some exceptions apply, so please contact us for more information)
  • living in England on the first day of your course and have been living in the UK, the Channel Islands or the Isle of Man for the three years previous to this. You may also qualify if you’re an EU national or a family member of an EU national, a refugee, a migrant worker, the child of a Swiss national or the child of a Turkish worker

Key facts

  • The loans are not means tested, there are no credit checks and you will be able to apply for a loan regardless of your employment status.
  • You will not have to pay anything back until you’re earning over £25,700
  • Your loan will cover the course fees (or part of), and will be paid directly to the College
  • The minimum amount you can borrow is £300
  • You can apply for up to four loans, but you can only have one loan at a time. You must not have previously had a loan to do the same course subject at the same level.
  • If your income drops below £25000 – then your loan repayments will be stopped
  • Each month you pay back 9% of any income over £25,000. For example,
    If you earn £28,000 a year £25,000 = £3,000
    9% of £3,000 = £270
    £270 /12 = £22.50
Your monthly repayments would be £22.50

How much can I get?

The amount you can get depends on your course, the tuition fees charged by your college or training organisation and maximum amounts set by the Government.

The minimum loan amount is £800.

You can take out a loan for the maximum amount to cover your tuition fee or you can pay all or part of the tuition fee yourself.

How’s the Loan Paid?

Student Finance England (SFE) will pay your agreed tuition fees to your college or training organisation once they’ve confirmed your attendance on the course.

You can apply more than once

Once you’ve completed your course, you’ll be eligible to apply for more 19+ Advanced Learning Loans (up to a total of four loans) to help you progress in your studies.
